| Highlights of the January 2006 General
Meeting
If you weren't able to attend the SDR Forum's
47th general meeting in Miami last month, here
are some of the highlights you missed:
- A
special day-long workshop, with hands-on tutorial,
on the Software Communications Architecture
(SCA) led by a team from Virginia Tech.
- First
public announcement from NASA that it had
issued an RFI on developing an open architecture
description for software defined radios.
- Vote
and approval of the SDR Security Working Group's
"High Level SDR Security Requirements"
document.
- Announcement
that the Forum had selected Mercury Computer
Systems, Inc. to create a reference waveform
for SCA implementation.
- Announcement
of the completion of the highly anticipated
Public Safety SIG's technical report (internal
review/voting underway).
- Briefing
from technical analyst Jim Gunn on his soon-to-be-released
market study tentatively titled "WiFi,
WiMAX, and Beyond 3G/4G."
- Update
reports on current state of wireless communications
in ITU regions 1, 2, and 3.
- Update
reports on current SDR activity within the
OMG and E2R.
- Inaugural
meeting of the newly created Education Working
Group.

Conducted five times a year, general meetings
typically involve focused plenary sessions to
address the business aspects of the Forum, management
of work, and approval of documents. In addition,
the Forum's working groups and Special Interest
Groups typically meet to discuss status of activities,
working documents and reports, new trends and
