Highlights of the January 2006 General Meeting

If you weren't able to attend the SDR Forum's 47th general meeting in Miami last month, here are some of the highlights you missed:

  • A special day-long workshop, with hands-on tutorial, on the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) led by a team from Virginia Tech.
  • First public announcement from NASA that it had issued an RFI on developing an open architecture description for software defined radios.
  • Vote and approval of the SDR Security Working Group's "High Level SDR Security Requirements" document.
  • Announcement that the Forum had selected Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. to create a reference waveform for SCA implementation.
  • Announcement of the completion of the highly anticipated Public Safety SIG's technical report (internal review/voting underway).
  • Briefing from technical analyst Jim Gunn on his soon-to-be-released market study tentatively titled "WiFi, WiMAX, and Beyond 3G/4G."
  • Update reports on current state of wireless communications in ITU regions 1, 2, and 3.
  • Update reports on current SDR activity within the OMG and E2R.
  • Inaugural meeting of the newly created Education Working Group.

For more details on these and other activities from the Miami general meeting, visit www.sdrforum.org.

Next up: the 48th general meeting, scheduled April 10-12 in San Francisco.

About the SDR Forum's general meetings
Conducted five times a year, general meetings typically involve focused plenary sessions to address the business aspects of the Forum, management of work, and approval of documents. In addition, the Forum's working groups and Special Interest Groups typically meet to discuss status of activities, working documents and reports, new trends and challenges, etc.
